The world of fashion is a global industry offering a multitude of careers. Exciting roles aren’t just reserved for fashion designers. Hairstylists also play a major role in completing total looks for runway, editorial and celebrity events.

Hairstylists and designers have a special relationship built on collaboration with hairstylists playing an integral role in bringing a designer’s final visions to fruition. This blog post will cover steps you can take to achieve your goal of being a part of the fashion industry through a career in hairdressing.

Step 1. The foundation for your career is your education and obtaining your cosmetology license.

All TONI&GUY students participate in a Student Soiree Runway Show prior to graduation where they learn to concept looks to tell a story and experience the high energy of working backstage at a runway show. ATLANTA ACADEMY: Instructor Spotlight!!!

It's time again...Alexis Rowland has decided to pass the tourch and nominated Ms. Dish Daniels as the Instructor of the Month, which means this post is dedicated to highlighting her journey in the Beauty Industry.

Our Sophmore Instructor and Instructor Representative for the Outreach Committee, Disha Daniels grew up in Savannah, Ga and moved to Dever when she was in the 8th grade. Her love for hair started in those middle grade years as she began cutting and coloring her friend's hair on her Aunt's carport. She laughed as she told me that she really wanted to use the money to be able to go to the roller skating rink. She knew her style early on, and people were always able to identify when someone had their hair done by Disha D. because she cut their fringe and colored it the same way! "They just kept coming back, so I perfected that look for sure," Disha joked. Disha moved back to Savannah in high school and that's when she realized hair could actually be a serious career move for her. "I saw so many people with different styles and the entertainment industry was on a boom, especially the music industry and I wanted to be apart of that."

While working for a wireless pager company, she attended Atlanta Technical College which she recalls was "completely structured on the state board and not out of the box or what people really went to the salons to get done." Dish did excel in her cosmotology program and in her last year she won 1st Place in the styling competition. Upon graduating, she began working in Downtown Atlanta in a salon where she realized she grew to love the art of cutting. Disha recalls, "I was clueless about cutting though, because my cosmotology program did not prepare me for this skill. I had to take additional classes on my own and of course I had to pay for them out of my own pocket."

She was then a Manager and Recruiter for Supercuts for 3 years where she oversaw several stylists but also facilitated presentations to vocational & traditional high schools about the various avenues available to them in the Supercuts company. Disha then remembered "cutting with shears just wasn't enough" so she began taking courses to obtain her babering license. Once she finished the program she worked about two years soley as a barber where she had the most enjoyable time in her career aside from her next journey, which was the lead stylist for Shepards Center, a salon in a nursing home. Her favorite client of all time resided in that nursing home; she was a major supporter and marching buddy with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Fastforwarding a few years, Disha began pursuing her instructors license while carrying her second baby, Savanna! She was inspired to be an instructor as all of her clients always told her they appreciated how she would tell them how to use their products and maintain their hair on their own until it was time to come back for another appointment. "I quickly found that I liked the structure of the teaching process. But I also realized teaching is a two-way street where students have to be willing to learn just as much as I do as the instructor. I think this is what helped me to get the highest instructor score in the history of this school." I asked Ms. Disha what she would like to do in the future and she replied, "I want to own a small cosmotology school in a country town where students don't have to travel. I'd also like to HIT THE LOTTO!!!"

Ms. Disha has a wonderful family which includes love of her life Mike, 24 year old son JaCorey who attends Savannah State, 17 year old Little Mikey who is a senior in high school, and Miss Savanna Rose who is 2 years old. Ms. Disha believes that her catering/nurturing personality and her ability adjust her communication to all audiences is what has made her successful in this industry and particularly an instructor.

TONI&GUY Keller/Fort Worth Academy Hosts Freedom Collection Soiree

The TONI&GUY Keller Academy recently hosted a regional soiree showcasing the Freedom Collection -- the latest collaboration between Zak Mascolo and the TONI&GUY Artistic Team. The show featured cut and colour demonstrations performed by members of the TONI&GUY Artistic Team, along with stylists and technicians from the Southlake, West 7th., and the Parks TONI&GUY Salons, as well as the TONI&GUY Keller Academy.

Regional Creative Director Austin Finley, whose Ariel cut is featured in the collection, explained that the collection features, "basic work done very progressively, with many techniques from the basic foundation. It showcases cohesive concepts and themes with elements that give movement away from the face, opening up the face." National Technical Education Director Samantha Finley added, "with the colour, we want to accentuate what's going on around the face, such as a shine band for versatility, or M-shaped sectioning for asymmetry."

"This collection offers things we can do to suit the client, which makes it extremely viable inside the salon," said Liz Ramirez, Technical Education Director at the TONI&GUY Parks Salon in Arlington.

TONI&GUY Keller Academy Instructor and Art Team member Abraham Valdez demonstrated the Ariel cut. "I think it's great to be a part of something like this because I'm able to get out of the classroom setting and show co-workers and students my creative side. There's obviously structure inside of education, but the Art Team allows for more creativity."

TONI&GUY Co-founder and former president Paul Joseph Marzioli, and TONI&GUY CEO Bruno Mascolo addressed the students with words of wisdom and encouragement.

"It's awesome to see so many students here tonight. Come to school everyday -- don't miss a day. You can and will get an awesome education," Paul Joseph explained. "The key is to never stop learning. Your license will be the ticket for more advanced education." Bruno added, "This collection is a great example of what we do. It's creative and inventive. This is a great business we're in, making people look good and feel good."

Keller Academy Senior student Charleey Martinez took in the evening with amazement and appreciation. "The education we're getting is so advanced. Having an event like this at the academy shows us where we can go and what we can do," she said. "Getting to meet Bruno was so cool. Him being here shows he's still in touch with us."

"Austin and the Art Team are doing a great job sharing the knowledge, which is a huge part of our TONI&GUY Culture," TONI&GUY Director of Operations Kent Movchan said. "If I were a student, I would be overwhelmed at all of the opportunity within the company. These soirees illustrate that whoever has the ambition and determination, the right attitude and the drive, can become successful within TONI&GUY and the hairdressing industry as a whole.

Colorado Springs Academy--- Helping out to fight childhood cancer!

The Colorado Springs Academy was so excited to help out again this year
with one of our local St. Baldricks events.

This is the second year the Academy has joined forced with the
Pikes Peak Derby Dames to raise money and awareness for the St.Baldricks foundation.

Many of the Academy's students and staff attended the event to watch the
action packed derby bout and cheer on the brave volunteers getting their heads shaved.

Our instructors had a great time sharing that experience with such amazing people
as they were on stage to shave heads for the event.

Our "More Than A Mane" Open House Event was a blast! The workshops were fun and informative. Our students did an amazing job on thier styling demos. The wardrobe and accessory vendors brought some great items from their spring collections. The food by Sweet Melissa's International Cuisine was absolutely delicious! Natalie Gibson-Studstill recently graduated and was hired on the spot by one of the visiting salons! Boy, the list can go on...instead we will just show you the fun we had!!! TONI&GUY Seattle Academy: Sophomore Test-Out March 2012

Every month students test-out to move on to the next level of the program. In the second month of the program sophomores have to create an avant garde style mannequin before they move on to become a Junior A. Every month the entire school, students and staff, look forward to seeing their visions come to life through this project. Students pick an inspiration, create their avant garde, then show the rest of the school their final work and talk about their inspiration and the techniques they used. Below is a picture of the March sophomore class and their completed avant gardes! Awesome job ladies!!

Nicole was inspired by ventriloquist dolls…she is terrified of them so she thought this would help her overcome her fears!

Hilary was inspired by Princess Bubblegum and the color lavender! Hilary LOVES lavender and her new hair color reminds us of that every day! :)

Danielle was inspired by a picture she found online and incorporated more color. She LOVES bright colors!

Gabi has and always will LOVE the classic bob! Her Avant Garde takes the bob to a whole new level!
