ATLANTA ACADEMY: Gettin' Ready For Prom!!!

Prom and Homecoming are important times in the lives of teens where they make memories that will last a lifetime. Becca Kirtman was a 14-year- old Florida student noticed that many of her peers could not to attend prom or homecoming due to financial hardship. She sought to change this by collecting and distributing hundreds of dresses on her own before she was killed a car accident in 2003. Her legacy lives on in the non-profit organization Becca’s Closet.

With 90 chapters worldwide, the Atlanta chapters make up one of the largest branches of the organization in the country. Becca's Closet serves hundreds of girls each year from 5 different locations. Students have come to Becca's Closet from homeless and abuse recovery shelters, foster care and after school programs, as well as countless schools across the state.

This year, Becca's Closet is proud to embark on a special project, bringing a Masquerade Prom to students who are hospital bound at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta @ Egleston Saturday, March 3, 2012. These teens who may miss their own prom due to illness deserve the chance to feel special, so the Outreach Committee as well as the student body & instructor volunteers of TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy-Atlanta and Becca’s Closet Atlanta has teamed up to create a memorable high school prom for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta @ Egleston.

Our Education Director, Darian Bishop will donate a few masquerade masks and will be helping to organize a "Becca's Closet Craft Day" with a group from Becca's Closet as well as TONI&GUY students and staff to help make hair accessories for 50+ students. Together we will make this night one that the patients and their families will never forget! ATLANTA ACADEMY: Ladies Night Was A Success!!!

Our first Ladies Night was a success! The clients, community neighbors, family and friends of our students had a blast and requested we make this an activity that we host on a regular basis. This event was organized and hosted by the Social Committee. This activity gave students the opportunity to get some extra practice on style outs, manicures and basic makeup application. The night was geared towards spotlighting the ladies by giving them an evening to mingle, eat and drink some goodies and of course be pampered!

Dallas Academy students go to the Art Institute of Dallas for an incredible photo shoot.

Dallas Academy students and instructors teamed up with Young Park, a photography student from the Art Institute of Dallas and Ashley Kim a fashion stylist and put together a great collaboration of work! The Dallas academy is filled with so much talent and creativity and as a team the instructors and staff are always looking for different ways to help the students express their burning creativity. Well last night the students got a chance to do just that with Young Park, a photography student at the Art Institute of Dallas and Ashley Kim, a fashion student from UNT. Young had wonderful visions for the 3 models that she wanted to use in her portfolio. Those visions were brought to life by her amazing photography skills and the talent of our students.

Allison Bullard and Shawnee Cana worked their magic on two models using loose waves for a vintage 40-50's feel and another had a very mod feeling using slicked back ponytails with intricate finishes.

Alba Azur applied some incredibly stunning and impactful make up to complete the total look for pictures that belong in any current fashion magazine. Good Job Team!!!

A raffle for a Fabulous product basket- funds go to the Student Soiree

ATLANTA ACADEMY: Style Out Competition!

I love competitions! They create a fun challenge to test the skill of each person competing. Today during our flex week schedule, I thought it would be fun to host a timed Style Out competition which was designed to allow students the opportunity to provide more time efficient service to our clients. The Judges brought their A game...move over Simon Cowell, you don't have anything on these tough cookies!!!

These educational activities also allow students to be creative, practice execution, demonstrate product knowledge and offer them the opportunity to learn to educate and make suggestions to their clients on creating client's desired “look.”

Students will use this educational activity and future competitions to rehearse for their style out workshop during our April 2nd Open House. Points were scored on Execution, Creativity, Product Knowledge, Timeliness and Overall Presentation. The top 3 winners won prizes and in order from 1st, 2nd and tie for 3rd place, the winners were:

Damon Westee, Brandy Wyrick, Claudia Guerra and Quinteria Cole! Everyone did a great job and we look forward to having more creative competitions to enhance the learning of our students, fun for the school and better experiences for our clients!!!

35 TONI&GUY Seattle students spent the day Friday January 13^th providing hair and nail services to people experiencing homelessness. United Way puts on the Community Resource Exchange at CenturyLink Field formally Qwest Field. The event connects homeless individuals and families with the services they need all in one place, in one day—with everything from housing, employment and legal assistance to free health services, haircuts, and voicemail accounts. James Ryder brings Hollywood to Keller/Fort Worth and Dallas

The TONI&GUY Keller Academy recently hosted renowned Hollywood make-up artist, James Ryder, who has worked with A-List actresses such as Katie Holmes and Reese Witherspoon, and on a wide range of films including Steel Magnolias, The Bruce Lee Story, Sum of All Fears, The Salton Sea, and The Cell -- for which he earned an Academy Award Nomination. For those who want to work in television or film, he advised that they start now. "One of the best things you can do right now as a student is start building a portfolio. Mix it up -- show lots of different looks, from classic to crazy avant garde. Volunteer to work on photo shoots doing hair and make-up. You can get paid with print images of the work you do, which look good in your book," he explained. "Whether you want go into fashion or film, you'll need a solid portfolio."

As he entertained students with stories from his beginnings in the world of high fashion, to his decades of experience in the motion picture industry, his message was clear. "Think big -- dream big! It doesn't have to take a long time to achieve your goals," Ryder said. "At 20, I was working on supermodels in New York, then started working on independent films," he added. "You guys have chosen a career where you get to play for the rest of your life. You can do whatever you want to do with the training you're getting here at TONI&GUY."

In addition to building a solid portfolio, Ryder told the students to think about an internship. "You can only get an internship while you're a student, so look into it now while you still have time. It's a great way to network and show people in the business that you're serious. It could be a TV station, theatre, ballet, or an independent film. It's a great way to learn different aspects of the business." he said. "Student films are another excellent way to break into the industry. The budget is usually low, so volunteers are always welcome," he added. "Those small student films are also great for networking."

Ryder shared some tricks of the trade, while discussing some make-up fundamentals such as the use of light and shadow, and tips like using matte finish hair pins that don't reflect light during photo shoots. "The people at the top of their game in hair and make-up are the ones who continually come up with new ideas and invent new ways to approach their craft," he said. Ryder then demonstrated a couple of quick techniques, including creating a swollen black eye on Junior A student, Scott Brown. "It's just interesting to see a guy like this come in and let us know that things can happen fast," Brown said. "What he's done is amazing." Junior C student, Kim Edwards, added, "I like how he showed us quick ways to work in a tight time crunch. I want to learn more, and can't wait to take the three workshops."

James Ryder is currently on a national tour lecturing at select hairdressing academies and conducting his trademarked RYDER make-up labs, which now claim 300,000 alumni in 100 cities.

TONI&GUY Seattle Academy: Sophomore Test-Out December 2011!

Every month students test-out to move on to the next level of the program. In the second month of the program sophomores have to create an avant garde style mannequin before they move on to become a Junior A. Every month the entire school, students and staff, look forward to seeing their visions come to life through this project. Students pick an inspiration, create their avant garde, then show the rest of the school their final work and talk about their inspiration and the techniques they used. A Wonderful Story for the New Year.

There are so many reasons to be thankful for this last year. I personally am so thankful that I have the honor of working for TONI&GUY. What an amazing place to be everyday whether you are a student or staff. This story that I am going to share with everyone pretty much "sums it up" on why we love living in Coeur d'Alene and being a part of TONI&GUY.

WE LOVE CDA

Just saw a great testimonial for the Beauty College here in Coeur d'Alene and for one of the students Crystal. The backgroung to the story is : A woman who is a *** cancer survivor and going through treatment finally decided to shave her head after trying to cut the sparse patches she currently had and not doing a great job.

Now the emotions it takes to decide to shave your head must be intense beyond all belief, but to then be treated the way she did at the first salon is atrocious.

The first salon told her it would cost $14 and when she was amazed at the cost, the gal had the nerve to say "Well, don't expect me to do anything special for you." She of coarse said thank you, but no, and left.

She then went to the Beauty College where not only did Crystal make sure she was treated with the utmost of care, but the College when she went to pay the $8 charge, told her it was on the house.

Now THAT is "Customer" service!

Student Success Story - Rachel Brumbaugh

Rachel Brumbaugh (pictured left with Bruno Mascolo) always knew she wanted to work in the cosmetology field. She first started her cosmetology training in high school. At the age of 16, she was living on her own, balancing high school, hairdressing school, and work. After graduation, she traveled for the next several years, working on the east coast, Midwest, and London.

Rachel had her first experience with TONI&GUY when she returned from overseas to live in New York City. “I took a class at the TIGI Academy in New York. I was so inspired by the TONI&GUY system of education that I decided I wanted to get involved with teaching and working for TONI&GUY.” At the age of 25, Rachel attended the Cosmetology Teacher program at the TONI&GUY Academy in Erie. Of her time at the Erie Academy, Rachel states “It really prepared me and set me up for what I wanted to do in my career overall.”

After graduating and getting her license, Rachel moved to Southern California to work in TONI&GUY’s Newport Beach salon. Soon after, T&G opened a new Academy in Santa Monica, and Rachel began her career as an instructor there. “The experience I had at the Erie Academy really helped me to understand how to set up the classes and clinic floor in the new school,” Rachel says. While working in Santa Monica, Rachel had the honor of joining TONI&GUY’s Artistic Team and was promoted to the Education Director of the Academy. “I loved everything about working at that Academy, and I had an amazing time there.” Rachel recalls.

TONI&GUY opened a new academy in Costa Mesa, California, Rachel was given the Academy Director position of the school. She was just 29 years old. When asked about the Academy, she says “Since then the school has grown so fast. I still feel that I’m so lucky to work in such a great environment with such an amazing team.” In 2011, Rachel won the award for Hairdresser of the Year for TONI&GUY and the team at her school won Best Academy Team. Of TONI&GUY, she says “I am so thankful to the Erie Academy and all the amazing mentors and role models I have had the opportunity to learn from at the TONI&GUY Team.”

TONI&GUY Seattle Academy: Holiday Potluck and Gift Exchange!

TONI&GUY Seattle Academy students and staff took an afternoon away from the typical school day to celebrate the holidays. After finishing up with the morning clients, we had a school wide potluck that included all of our holiday favorites, turkey, ham, stuffing, green bean casserole, pie, etc. the potluck was followed by a clothing auction to raise money for this year’s annual Soiree’. Students were asked to bring in gently used clothes that they no longer wear. Then we auctioned off each piece generally with a starting price of 25 cents. The remaining clothes that were not bought were donated to Mary's Place, A women's shelter in Seattle. The students were able to raise $173.00 towards their Soiree’ that will be February 2012!

The white elephant gift exchange was awesome. Lots of stealing going on, with some of the more popular gifts being Starbucks gift cards, scratch tickets and makeup!

Finally we ended the afternoon with the results of the ugly Xmas sweater contest. There were a lot of ugly sweaters but there could only be one winner! Who is your favorite?
