The glitz and glitter accented the Dance FX Academy’s annual showcase, “Rockin’ FX”, where the hair was as big as the split leaps gracing the stage of the Maumee High School auditorium.

“I love any chance we get for our students to participate in the Toledo community. It gives them a chance to use their talents to benefit others, which is all part of the Spotlight Culture we so strongly believe in at TONI&GUY,” Recruiting Director Kristin Reichardt said. “We have worked with Dance FX in the past, and it’s so fabulous to see students from such different artistic disciplines work together. Also, this gives our students experience in stage hair and make up work, a career path many of them want to explore.”

Dance FX Academy Owner Michelle Thayer said the theme gave the students the opportunity to dance outside their comfort zone, giving them a challenge.
“Hair and make-up set the tone for each dance,” Thayer said. “Using creative styles make it more enjoyable for the audience to view. As dancers, it is the final touches that make the dance spectacular.”

TONI&GUY’s participation in styling hair and make up for the 2011 Dance FX “Rockin’ FX” Showcase continues a more than 18-month year partnership between the organizations. Dancers and instructors from Dance FX participated in the 2010 TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy Student Soiree “Somnia” in October.
The educators and staff of TONI&GUY and Dance FX believe that artistic expression helps people to become well-rounded.

“It creates an atmosphere where everything makes sense even in everyday life,” Thayer said. “We are able to reach past ourselves if we allow it.”

Learn more about Dance FX Academy online at dancefxacademy.com.

Blog Post: Toledo Academy showcases rockin' styles

(Photo courtesy of Michelle Thayer, Dance FX Academy)

This weekend, students from the Dance FX Academy will showcase rock n' roll-infused dance routines set off by wild, glitzy hair and make up styles by TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy student stylists.

TONI&GUY's participation in styling hair and make up for the 2011 Dance FX "Rockin' FX" Showcase continues a more than 2 year partnership between the organizations. Knowing the right questions to ask is key to a consultation.

Something I learned 15 years ago is that clients are nervous and apprehensive about seeing a new stylist. To this end, a very important part of a stylist’s job is to make a client feel relaxed and comfortable from the beginning of the service, the first time they visit and the 100th time they visit. A stylist’s appearance, body language, speech and tone of voice are vital elements of a client’s comfort level. Here are aspects of a quality consultation:

Permission

Asking a client if a specified action sounds like what she is looking for before moving on to an execution assists in clarity. Make the client a part of the decision-making process.

Personalize

Finding out a client’s specific style – such as classic, trendy, glamorous, street or modern – is a good place to start a consultation.

Ask questions. Many, many questions, before you even more from the chair to the shampoo bowl.

What are your goals for your hair?

What makes a bad hair day for you?

Do you want more shine, fullness, smoothness or curl?

What colors are you attracted to?

How much time do you want to spend on you hair?

Do you have a beauty budget?

Making a written questionnaire to help gather this information saves time and is extremely valuable.

Check a client’s comfort level, then check again.

Before moving to the shampoo bowl and beginning the service, a smart stylist asks if a client has any questions about the look they have discussed. This keeps the client in control and knowing the stylist cares about what he or she thinks.

Retail sales and pre-booking seeds are planted during a consultation

Listen to your client during the consultation to determine the actual style she wants and how she wants to maintain that style, then use the proper products during your service to introduce them to the client.

If a client’s hair is dry, suggest a trim to get rid of the dry ends. If the texture is frizzy, suggest smoothing products, whereas if it is flat and lifeless, the client will need a thickener or volumizing product. Clients who want a longer-lasting style and who don’t want to spend as much time throughout the day maintaining their look will want to invest in a high-quality hairspray or finishing wax.

When a guest brings you a photograph of the look she wants to achieve, use that as an opportunity to not only examine the cut and color, but the texture, shine and other finished elements. Suggest appropriate add-on services and make it clear you have time for the client and want to give her ever element of the look she brought you, even if she just originally thought she wanted a single service. There is a lot more that goes into an overall look than just a cut or a color!

Use the consultation as a chance to discuss future services and create a style plan for your guest – not only for first-time or newer clients but for your current clients, as well.

This is a time to build a relationship! Determine what a client’s needs are, discuss seasonal changes (especially in color!) and educate her on what is happening with her hair and within fashion as a whole.

Take the time to make sure every client knows and feels that you are taking care of them. That is what truly makes a consultation successful!

-- Janice Patton Edinger is the owner and art director of Attitudes -- A Salon, with locations in Sylvania and Toledo, Ohio. Probably more then you can remember. Only 3 percent of the world’s population are natural red heads, and most stylist are afraid of performing red colour services. The biggest reason for this is that hot roots are a major culprit, while understanding the undertone of a true red is another.

When dealing with clients who want to use red colour, a consultation complete with swatches providing various levels and tones of red
   is a must!

A client may say she wants one thing but her eye will tell you a whole different story. Understanding what the finished product will look
like is important to the client in that moment, but also is critical to maintaining her repeat business and influences how many referrals
she will send you. For instance, on a natural level 7-8, a level 7 red may look pink or salmon, not the most requested shades. On the
other hand, a level 5 – say 55/66 TIGI Colour Intense Reds –with 20 volume activator will look stunning on the same head.

A true red will look slightly violet in tone. If your client says "just don't make me purple," you might want to add some copper tones to
   your selection.

A favorite formula known as "all the reds" with TIGI Colour Creative is equal parts 6/46 – a copper red – and 5/5 – level 5 mahogany.

The beauty of TIGI colour is the ability to customize each and every client’s formula. I get so excited when I talk about it!

Mix Master is TIGI's weapon when it comes to being complacent. Seven pure tones are used to accent, modify or intensify any TIGI colour. In the case of our latter formula, you may add copper, red or violet tones to personalize to what your client wants, as well at match her skin tone.

Lastly, remember the issue above of hot roots? Simple steps can be taken to avoid this glow of the unwanted kind.

First, determine the natural and desired levels. Is there non-pigmented hair present? If so, a minimum of 20 volume activator is necessary. The secret here is to use one level higher activator on the mid-shaft and ends then on the root area. You want to add the vibrancy to the area most needed, which happens automatically with reds and the root area.

Process for half the time, remix with fresh colour and one level lower activator, process for the full time and viola' – beautiful, vibrant and long-lasting reds!

-- Susan McGee is a hairdresser, stylist, daymaker, hairipist and salon owner. A flawless finish brings completes a look, and is a skill successful personal appearance artists need to master. Some cosmetology students discover a passion for the finishing touches that lead them to consider a career as a make up artist – but where do they start?

The answer to that is very simple – start in the bathroom, of course. It sounds simplistic, but the best place to start being a makeup artist is in your own mirror. The safety of your bathroom is the perfect place to begin trying new techniques, but there is much more to it than that. The journey into make up artistry can be long – mine was – but a key is to never give up hope that the techniques you develop on your own will lead to hot skills and an even hotter career.

1. Research, research, research cosmetic lines and companies

In the beginning of your career you will hear “no” many times before you hear a “yes” – so start by doing your research to find a company and product line you respect, appreciate and about which you can become an expert.

I worked for various companies before I started using the TIGI cosmetic line, and most of those experiences were spent just trying to find that company and makeup that I liked to work with best. When you find the company you want to represent, build yourself a kit and keep a good supply on hand – including 10-20 sets of brushes. While that may sound like a lot, remember that if you do get the chance to do a big show or photo shoot you cannot use the same brushes on everyone so, have plenty and clean as you go.

2. Build and maintain a current portfolio

While you are searching for the right cosmetic line to fit you, use the experiences with different companies to build your portfolio. Take pictures of your work often and consistently. One of the largest disservices you can do to yourself is to have an outdated portfolio. When you interview for a company they do not want to see what you did 5 years ago; they want to see how you relate to what is going on in current trends. Keep yourself up on current trends and learn how to manipulate them into different looks and get out there.

3. Practice makes perfect -- even imperfect practice can lead to an awesome new look

Practice is the most important step to getting into the business. As a hairdresser, the best practice you get is finishing every client, every time. The more you do something the better you get at it.

Try to volunteer with a local theatre troupes, photographers or modeling agencies. The more active you are in the community, the more chances others have to see your work and the more sought after you become. Community involvement leads to constructive criticism and opportunities to learn how to best hone your skills. Never let your ego outshine your work.

4. Search for and take advantage of advanced training

There are several companies that offer advanced makeup artist classes. Perhaps the best I have found is Last Looks Makeup Academy – they offer people who attend their classes possible job placement, and they have a wide variety of classes from bridal makeup to TV and movie makeup.

Another great way to develop techniques is to attend trade shows such as the International Beauty Show and America’s Beauty Show. By attending shows in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, you pick up techniques from various parts of the country that may not yet be in your area.

At the end of the day, remember the 3 Ps – practice, patience and professionalism. Other people can contribute to you moving closer to your goal of working in makeup artistry full time, but you are the only one who can make your goal a reality.

– Jeff Graczyk began his career as a make up artist 12 years ago while working at department store makeup . Whitney and Amanda started their classes Jan. 3, while Liz, Cody and Amanda jumped into their training today, the final day of January. Over the next week, take a look at the passion that makes our January students fantastic future stylists!

Meet ... Amanda Leonard, a 2010 graduate of Anthony Wayne High School

1. What excites you about beginning your career in cosmetology?

Finally doing something for me that I am passionate about and having the ability to make others feel great about how they look!

  2. What are you most looking forward to about beginning classes?

I am most looking forward to learning cutting and coloring techniques.

  3. What most excites you about having the opportunity to attend TONI&GUY?

I am most exciting about attending a professional, fashion-forward school.

4. What do you see as potential challenges you're ready to tackle?

Potential challenges I am ready to tackle are developing a rhythm and building a clientele.

5. What's one quirky personality trait you have that makes you unique?

I would say my ability to make friends. Although it may not be unique, I like to meet new people and form friendships.

6. When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was younger I always wanted to do hair! From a young age I loved to play with my stepmother's hair, and she always encouraged me to follow my dream

7. What is your favorite characteristic about yourself?

My warm personality -- I love that I am able to spark a conversation with a complete stranger!

8. What are your hobbies?

I love being with friends and family, and creating art, like drawing, painting and doing crafts. I also work at a small pizza place.

9. Tell us about your family ...

I recently moved out of my mom and stepdad's house and into an apartment with my boyfriend of three years. We own a female lab mix named Chloe.

10. Any final words of wisdom?

Follow your dreams! As cliche as it is, if I did not follow my dreams I wouldn't be here at TONI&GUY!

********************************************************************

Meet ... That leads to the question: What does it take to be successful today as a hairdresser? Working in the hairdressing industry, owning my own salon and being involved in TONI&GUY education, I have learned some different thinking of who we are and what we do as hairdressers.

As hairdressers, we are service providers in the beauty industry. We get to dress up, be creative, and change peoples’ lives everyday.

To fully understand our role as a service provider, we need to view hairdressing as more than just cutting and coloring hair, one person after the other. We need to take the time to consult and educate the customer on what we can do to accomplish what they want and need.

So many times we may have the preconceived notion that a client doesn’t want to spend extra money or they don’t even like me or they are intimidating, and we back down and just try to finish them as quickly as possible. These thoughts do nothing to create a successful career.

My belief is that through continuing education, we can assist a new cosmetology student in how to make a career path to many levels of success based on goal setting and willingness to see themselves and their roles differently. Goal setting and changing perspective are some challenging areas many hairstylists want to ignore. It is said that 20 percent of stylists work on 80 percent of the population that spends money on personal appearance. The top three strategies that the 20 percent of stylists who maintain the majority of the clientele employ are selling retail, pre-booking the next appointment and gaining referrals.

People wouldn’t go to the doctor, dentist or interior decorator and expect to leave without a solution or course of action to why they made the appointment to begin with. The same is true when people visit their stylist. Be willing to share that information – speak with people about what they need when they book their appointment and again once they are in your chair. Share a solution or course of action with your client to help them have a great experience.

If you haven’t educated your client on what products and tools they need while they are in your chair, within 2 days of getting hair cut or colored they will search for products somewhere else to make a purchase.

Pre-booking will make sure that the guest gets the time and day he or she wants and secure your schedule to keep your book of business full. Set goals for pre-booking current clients while they are in front of you and satisfied with your services. If you stay on track with your goals, everyone wins – you and your clients!

Another excellent source of business other than working your current client list is to grow your clientele through referrals. What a great way to do business, just asking a client if he or she would pass a card if they receive a compliment on their hair. Most people are willing to help someone they trust with their hair. Gaining referrals is so important, yet I see and talk to stylists and salon owners everywhere and it seems our industry struggles with these simple business strategies.

When it comes to growing our business and measuring our “success,” education and knowledge sets us free. Knowledge gives us confidence to direct our clients or co-workers in the right direction with their hair, nails, skin or make up. I believe in continuing education. It has kept me excited through more than 30 years of hairdressing. I couldn’t be happier than I am today but it is because of companies such as TONI&GUY and other mentors in my life that help me thrive in this industry by teaching me, a trait I hope to pass on to young hairdressers as they start their careers.

-- Janice Patton Edinger is the owner and art director of Attitudes -- A Salon, with locations in Sylvania and Toledo, Ohio. Throughout her career she served as a TIGI Ambassador, including being named 2006 USA Global Ambassador for TIGI-BedHead. Edinger has been a stylist in Toledo for more than 20 years.

Blog Post: Potential students test drive life behind the chair

With makeup littering the floor, the young women giggled as they practiced applying each other's eyeshadow. Around them stood the results of their hairstyling attempts -- six mannequin heads with intricately braided and twisted updos. While this looked like a familiar scene in the world of the TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy, what made this workshop special is that it was full of potential stylists who still have yet to enroll in classes.

Held the day before Thanksgiving, the open house served as a mini-camp to introduce future students to the avenues available to them within hairdressing education. Taught by current TONI&GUY students, the six attendees toured the academy, learned about the TONI&GUY curriculum and Spotlight Culture, learned hairstyling and makeup techniques and left with goodie bags.

"The purpose of it was to give high school students an opportunity to have a hands-on experience in the hairdressing industry before they make any decisions on what they want to do after high school," said Admissions Specialist Deidra Robison after the event.

"I wanted to see high school students have the opportunity to get excited about the hairdressing industry," Robison said. "So many people have a different view on hairdressing as an industry than the hairdressing we teach. They think hairdressing is roller sets, perms -- we want to expose them to the fashion-forward aspects of the industry."

Including the current TONI&GUY students as instructors helps for them to take ownership of their own education, as well as gives the prospective students a chance to talk to people already working towards becoming cosmetologists.

"It gives our students the opportunity to get others excited about their academy and their career choice," Robision said. "It allows them an opportunity to connect and share with younger students."

High school students Taylor Jurski and Haley Heller attended the workshop the day after learning about it at their high school's college and career night. Both said their first exposure to TONI&GUY was so fun they wanted to keep learning.

"I liked all of it," Jurski, 18, said. "The staff was really nice."

Heller, a freshman, said while she enjoyed the event, she wished it would have lasted longer than 3 hours.

Kelsey Dowling, a high school junior, passes by the TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy on her way to school. She said the make up was her favorite part of the experience, as did her sister, Tiffany Dowling. A freshman in college, Tiffany Dowling attended the workshop as moral support for her younger sister, but said she, too, learned specific techniques.

Cherie Webb became familiar with TONI&GUY after seeing a TV commercial featuring fantasy work by students from the Toledo academy. As a more mature student, the 39-year-old wife and mother said she most appreciated learning about TONI&GUY's intensive curriculum and the opportunities available to TONI&GUY students while they are in training. TONI&GUY students plan and execute events such as the fashion shows like the annual student soiree. The genuine, inclusive environment she experienced during her time at the academy also made a strong impression on her.

"Everyone was very warm and welcoming," Webb said. "[They] made me feel like I was wanted here."

Two more mini-camp workshops are scheduled to take place in December.
