Rapunzel, Rapunzel let down your hair … with some added flair.

Students from the Toledo TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy partnered with a local salon today to give Toledo-area girls n experience fit for a princess. Three junior students joined Attitudes – A Salon as the salon hosted a local screening for the Disney 3-D animated film “Tangled.”

Starring actress Mandy Moore, the film that opens nation-wide today is an updated look at the classic children’s tale “Rapunzel.” The TONI&GUY students offered to style hair and give bling strings to young girls attending the premier at Rave Motion Pictures Levis Commons 12. The shiny, tinsel-like threads add glimmer and glitz to any hairstyle – a trait that helped the girls in attendance feel like royalty for their special event.

“They were really excited once they found out what they were,” Dory Rivera said. “The movie was all about hair so they wanted to do something fun with their own.”

Rivera admitted she was nervous at first since as a junior she still is not very experienced in working with the public, but her nerves quickly dissipated as she began to interact with the girls.

“Once you see the little girls and their faces I got really excited,” she said, estimating that the ages of the girls in attendance ranged from 5 to 10 years old. “How many times do you get to do this? Little girls walk out of a movie and you get to surprise them.

“When you leave getting your hair done you always feel cuter, prettier, you hold your head up a little higher,” Rivera said. “If I can give that feeling to someone else I think that’s really awesome.”

The students also distributed flyers to the adults in the audience, with an offer of 25 percent off TIGI products in exchange for bringing a pair of new socks for donation to the Toledo-area charity Hannah’s Socks. TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy also is a distribution location for Hannah’s Socks donations.

Using the event as a way to promote a local charity, especially at the holidays, spoke volumes of Attitudes – A Salon and the company’s values, another TONI&GUY student observed.

“They were giving back to the community with the Hannah’s Socks thing, and it just explained what kind of company they are,” Jennifer Pederson said. “They’re family oriented and care about their community.

“I felt like I got to go out into the community and do something nice,” she added. “It makes me feel like I have more experience putting myself out there as a hairstylist and becoming more comfortable with exhibiting that to the public.”

Junior student Heather Puls, said getting out of the classroom and participating in something different than the normal day helped give her a push to remember the larger picture of why she works so hard in school.

“It made me feel closer to my destination and my goal of getting my license,” Puls said. “I was doing something for an actual salon. I was helping to promote them, which is one of the things I’ll be doing eventually once I’m working in a salon.

“It reopens your eyes and gets you excited again for becoming licensed,” she said. “Gives you a little push to keep going and persevere.”
