Another graduation ceremony fills new students at Toni&Guy Hairdressing Academy in Santa Monica with hope for the future.

The class that started its journey last July is now saying farewell to the school it's called home for the last ten months. The graduates agree that while the school was a struggle to complete, it was well worth it in the end. With people chiming in from the audience to overwhelming emotion, it was truly a special day at the Santa Monica Academy.

Only in his fifth month at the Toni&Guy Hairdressing Academy in Santa Monica, Jordan David is on the fast track to success. Just a few weeks ago, he participated in a photoshoot in New York City that could put his name in lights in the hair and fashion industry.

He met up with Global Hair & Fashion Group for an annual photoshoot, and was even able to use his own model to show off his skills. He plans to enter the pictures he took in the student category of the Photographic Awards, hoping to continue Toni&Guy's winning streak at the Santa Monica Academy. Jasmine Change was last year's winner.

"To see other hairstylists from all around the country and from France working in their own unique and artistic way was an inspirational experience," said Jordan. "It has really motivated me to try new things back here at the Santa Monica Academy."

Before the New York photoshoot, Jordan also assisted Santa Monica Academy Director David Evans with photography and hair at the monthly meeting of the Toni&Guy Artistic Team.

We can't wait to see what Jordan does next.

Blog Post: Extra Week Means Extra Fun

Everyone loves a month with an extra week in it, and it is no different at Toni&Guy Hairdressing Academy in Santa Monica. When an extra week is squeezed into the month, students reap the benefits.

It is known as Flex Week. During that special week, instead of the structured classes Toni&Guy prides itself in, students get to step outside of the curriculum and learn more about cosmetology through fun presentations and events. Next week, students are in for a treat.

Planned for this Flex Week, a presentation on photography work. This will include how to organize a photo shoot and all the ins and outs a student needs to know to use a photo shoot for their portfolios. Students are all given the opportunity to do their own photo shoots throughout the course and have access to trained and talented photographers to assist them.

There will also be classes for advanced cutting and color techniques as well as make up demonstrations and work shops. To top it all off, special guest Dr. David Baron will give a presentation on healthy hairdressing, which will highlight the importance of hygiene in the salon and work place.

It is shaping up to be a fun week!

That is this year's theme for the annual Toni&Guy Hairdressing Academy Soiree at the Santa Monica campus. On July 17th, students will have the opportunity to show their vision of the film maker's movies.

There will be six presentations that are a fashion show in themselves. Each presentation will express the theme through hair, make up, wardrobe, choegraphy and music.

"This is a great opportunity for students to combine their skills and imagination to show potential employers their talent," says David Evans, director of the Santa Monica Academy. He goes on to say, not only will this create job opportunities for them, it is also a way for students to celebrate their hard work and successes during the program.

The soiree is open to the public. Also in attendance, besides students' friends and families will be celebrities from the hairdressing industry. The location has yet to be announced.

Blog Post: Tear-Jerker Graduation Ceremony

Another class is graduating at the Santa Monica Toni&Guy Hairdressing Academy. While their officlal graduation date is not until March 31st, the class that started on May 4, 2010 celebrated with the rest of the school their accomplishments through the ten and a half month program. Each of the seniors said a few words about his or her experiences here at Toni&Guy drawing several laughs and more than a few tears from students and faculty alike.

The wonderful part of classes at this academy is how students become more than classmates, they become each other's best friends. Gabriel Jenkins recounted his heart-wrenching story of living in his car for a short time and still making it to school everyday. He said his classmates were the only thing that kept him coming back and he thanked them for that. Now, he's looking forward to a successful career as a very talented hairdresser. He encouraged the newer students to continue pursuing their dreams no matter what happens.

Blog Post: A Graduate's Difficult but Worthwhile Journey Through TONI&GUY

Congratulations to Katia Gutierrez, Toni&Guy Santa Monica’s newest graduate.

Little did she know it would take her nearly a year and a half to complete the 10 ^1/2 month program.

“Don’t get pregnant while you are in school.” Katia was forced to withdraw just weeks before graduating when she was put on bed rest. But after welcoming her second daughter into the world, Katia was back and ready to finish her education.

“It was definitely worth coming back to school, but it was very challenging.”

She also had advice for those thinking about attending the academy.

“Milk it,” she said laughingly. “I mean, bring in friends and potential clients so you can have someone to work on. It’s much different from working on a doll head.”

As she gets her hair and make up done by friends and fellow classmates Gabriel Jenkins and Lauren Dacey, she says she is thankful for her Toni&Guy education because she will be able to apply the fundamentals she has learned to, not just hairdressing, but other aspects in life.

“It’s been a great experience. I learned a lot more than I expected.”

Recently, I have had so many students come to me with their success stories, both graduates and current students, and I would like to share those. They are so uplifting it can make anyone's day brighter. Not long ago, graduate Anthony Rodriguez emailed us with the details of his new job, just a few short months after graduating. "I'm proud to say that a lot of interviews I went on loved that I went to Toni&Guy Academy. They actually use and teach the Toni&Guy methods and techniques. I'm now working under famous Laurent D from Prive' Salon. He tested my blow drying skills and hired me on the spot! It's tough working long hours, but I'm happy with how much you guys prepared us for what was to come."

We love hearing these stories. It makes what we do everyday worth it. So, please, graduates and current students, send me your stories and I will be happy to post them.

Congratulations to our new Junior A class. Their great work is still on display at the academy. These avante garde pieces are the test outs of the sophomore phase. Only eight weeks into the program, students are given free rein to show their creativity using Toni&Guy cut and color techniques. They create their own unique signature look, which is on display for the whole academy to see and vote on. The winner earns a certificate for best piece, as well as bragging rights. Check out all the photo's that were taken of the amazing work.

There was at least one designer who was a hit at the 2011 L.A. Fashion week. With the help of the TONI&GUY Artistic Team and the Santa Monica Academy, martinMARTIN put on a spectacular show that has been featured in the Oakazine. The sportswear label launched in 2000 and has been gaining momentum in the fashion world. Hair and makeup was done by the Toni&Guy Artistic Team and students from the Santa Monica Academy, which was recognized in the magazine article. The students and artistic team were also on the scene helping with hair and makeup from other fashion lines.
