Also don't forget to 'Share' your favorite to your profile to get that stylist more votes! Likes will be counted until 12 p.m. the day of the show, Wednesday, March 21st. Then the stylist with the most votes will be given the 'Facebook Award' for the 2012 TONI&GUY Erie Academy Hair Show! The show will be at the Avalon Hotel on March 21st from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm!

Rachel Brumbaugh (pictured left with Bruno Mascolo) always knew she wanted to work in the cosmetology field. She first started her cosmetology training in high school. At the age of 16, she was living on her own, balancing high school, hairdressing school, and work. After graduation, she traveled for the next several years, working on the east coast, Midwest, and London.

Rachel had her first experience with TONI&GUY when she returned from overseas to live in New York City. “I took a class at the TIGI Academy in New York. I was so inspired by the TONI&GUY system of education that I decided I wanted to get involved with teaching and working for TONI&GUY.” At the age of 25, Rachel attended the Cosmetology Teacher program at the TONI&GUY Academy in Erie. Of her time at the Erie Academy, Rachel states “It really prepared me and set me up for what I wanted to do in my career overall.”

After graduating and getting her license, Rachel moved to Southern California to work in TONI&GUY’s Newport Beach salon. Soon after, T&G opened a new Academy in Santa Monica, and Rachel began her career as an instructor there. “The experience I had at the Erie Academy really helped me to understand how to set up the classes and clinic floor in the new school,” Rachel says. While working in Santa Monica, Rachel had the honor of joining TONI&GUY’s Artistic Team and was promoted to the Education Director of the Academy. “I loved everything about working at that Academy, and I had an amazing time there.” Rachel recalls.

TONI&GUY opened a new academy in Costa Mesa, California, Rachel was given the Academy Director position of the school. She was just 29 years old. When asked about the Academy, she says “Since then the school has grown so fast. I still feel that I’m so lucky to work in such a great environment with such an amazing team.” In 2011, Rachel won the award for Hairdresser of the Year for TONI&GUY and the team at her school won Best Academy Team. Of TONI&GUY, she says “I am so thankful to the Erie Academy and all the amazing mentors and role models I have had the opportunity to learn from at the TONI&GUY Team.”

Janette, a senior, is described by her instructors as being very driven and willing to take on any challenge. Janette works well with others and has been a mentor to several of her peers. She has maintained solid attendance, despite commuting from Corry daily. Her daughter, Heather, is a Toni&Guy graduate as well. Congratulations Janette.

For the past several years, TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy students and staff have volunteered their time and expertise in cosmetology and hairdressing to help prepare the cast of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” for their big performance. This year is no different.

The Erie Dance Conservatory performed their version of the Classic Dr.Seuss Christmas tale December 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. A performance like this requires a great amount of creativity to make the characters come to life. The students and staff of TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy were able to use their artistic ability to recreate each Who’s individual hairstyle.TONI&GUY looks forward to this event every year, and as always the showswere a great success!

Daniel McHenry is a 2005 graduate of TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy. Prior to enrolling at TONI&GUY, Daniel worked several years for a furniture company and at a restaurant in order to support himself and his two daughters.

Becoming a hairdresser was something that Daniel had always wanted to do. “I felt that unless I went to school and did something different with my life, I would never feel satisfied. I believed that the love I had for styling hair was going to take my family to a better place and give me peace-of-mind.” Daniel says.

At the age of 30, he took the first step toward realizing his dream and decided to enroll at TONI&GUY. Daniel chose TONI&GUY because “they are an international school and one of the best in the industry.” He enjoyed attending TONI&GUY because of the schools educational style, the faculty, and way it kept students motivated to become the best stylist they could be.

Soon after graduating from TONI&GUY, Daniel opened his own hair salon, McHenry and Company, in Erie, Pennsylvania. After being in business for nearly six years, he reveals that he has worked very hard to make his salon what it is today.

Currently Daniel sits on the board of Cosmetology for TONI&GUY, and his salon won Erie’s Choice Award for Best Salon in 2011. When asked about his salon, he says, “I try to give everyone a personal experience and strive to make all of our clients feel they are beautiful inside and out. I get a thrill out of helping others and making them feel wonderful. It’s what I was meant to do.”

Daniel cannot say enough positive things about his education at TONI&GUY. “They helped mold me into the person I am today, and I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for them. It feels nice knowing that I can pay my bills and not have the worries I once had. Thank you TONI&GUY for giving me a great education and the tools I needed to make this life a reality!”

Blog Post: Student Success Story - Liliya Bondarenko

Liliya Bondarenko is a recent graduate of TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy. Lilia moved to the United States in 2002 from Ukraine with her husband and four children. Prior to moving the U.S. she was an engineering major at a college in Ukraine. After moving to Erie, Liliya became employed at a local merchandise return center as an inspector.

Growing up in Ukraine, Liliya had always been fascinated by design and fashion. Much of her inspiration came from her mother, who was the director of a beauty boutique in Ukraine. Shortly after settling in Erie, she realized that this would give her the opportunity to do what she has always wanted to do; begin a career in cosmetology. Her first obstacle was that she didn’t speak any English. She says “My greatest challenge before my education was the language barrier that I faced when we first moved here. After several years of taking English classes and with hard work and commitment, I was able to reach my goal of learning English as a third language.”

Liliya wasted no time once she learned English. She says “I still wanted to pursue my dream of working in cosmetology so I started searching for available schools.” She was surprised to learn that an internationally recognized beauty school was right here in Erie, Pa. After going on a tour and meeting some instructors she applied to TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy. “The facility and staff were amazing.”

Liliya says she liked many things about TONI&GUY. “I felt very welcome and comfortable right from the beginning. TONI&GUY didn’t just give me an advanced education; they took me to a whole different level of hairdressing skill and professionalism. The education at TONI&GUY feels more like working in a salon than taking classes in a beauty school. After my graduation at TONI&GUY, I knew I was walking out with the skills, knowledge and confidence to work in the beauty industry.”

Now Liliya is the proud owner of her own hair salon, Liliya Salon on West 12^th Street here in Erie. She couldn’t be happier with the new career path that TONI&GUY helped set her on, saying that “My career change has positively affected me and my family. It allows me to work with a more flexible schedule so that I can spend more quality time with my four children and my husband.”

As we all know, over the past few years, it has been challenging to find that perfect job. However, for several of our recent graduates, a new and exciting career began shortly after receiving a world class education and graduating from TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy.

Here are just a few of the success stories from recent graduates who are beginning their careers as Cosmetologists. Christy Cabral is currently employeed at Panache Salon & Spa, in Erie, PA. Rachel Zemp, is now working at Conventina Day Spa, in Waterford, PA. Jacqueline Headlee has accepted a position at Posh Beauty Salon, in Upper St Clair, PA (located in the southwest suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA). Jacqueline was offered (and accepted) the position prior to her graduation from TONI&GUY. She will join several other past Toni&Guy graduates who continue to find career success at Posh. Lisa Martin-Campbell, the owner of Posh, is also a TONI&GUY graduate.

Graduates of any field will undoubtedly face increasing competition in their respective job markets. However, our instructors, graduates, and the employers who hire them, feel that the instruction our students receive while attending TONI&GUY, gives them an edge when seeking employment.

Blog Post: 4 Winners from Erie Academy in the International Hair and Beauty Show Hairstyling Competition!

Four students from TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy in Erie were winners in the International Hair and Beauty Show’s hair styling competition held in New York City on May 23, 2011.

Winners were:

· Ashley McCullum – 1^st Place Student Freestyle Competition

· Louis Snow – 3^rd Place Student Freestyle Competition

· Melissa Cihon – 2^nd Place Student Barbering Competition

· Kassandra Spacht – 5^th Place Student Barbering Competition

The four winners will appear on the Bravo show “Jersylicious,” a reality television program that follows the personal and professional lives of the hair stylists and makeup artists who work at the Gatsby Salon in New Jersey.

Senior Floor Instructor at TONI&GUY, Melissa Hughes, accompanied the students to this event, at which schools from all over the country participate.

TONI&GUY has been providing cosmetology, hairdressing, hairstyling, and beauty career training in the Erie area for many years and have graduated hundreds of students.
