Blog Post: Meet Scottsdale's Director of Education...AK Mack!!

The Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy in Scottsdale has been lucky enough have AK Mack as their Director of Education since their May 2011 opening. AK is an award-winning industry leader with 16 plus years as a hairdresser, owner, partner, and educator. He has been an integral part of Toni & Guy Collections and National Ad Campaigns that have been featured in Harper’s Bazaar and W Magazine. His work has been represented as an image for the Toni & Guy sponsorship logo in the 2009 New York Fashion Week and has worked backstage in numerous fashion shows with the TIGI International team. AK’s experience and knowledge has been a great addition to the Scottsdale Academy and our students have been fortunate enough to learn from his work. We are all thrilled to have him as part of our team and look forward to our new and prospective students joining us here in Scottsdale!

Q: How did you get your start in the hairdressing world?

A: “I was 23yrs old selling latex gloves for a company in Santa Cruz, California, and my roommate asked me if I would go with him to get his haircut. The guy cutting his hair was a gentleman named Boyd and this guy had the entire look; tattoos, motorcycle, girls and all the swag in the world. It really caught me by surprise and I knew exactly then that I wanted to be a hairdresser. Boyd then became my mentor as I first started out and the rest was history!”

Q: When did you begin working with Toni & Guy and how has your experience been?

A: “I moved to Scottsdale, AZ and began working for a salon called Regents in Fashion Square Mall. It then became America’s first Toni & Guy partnership in December of 1994. The experience has been nothing but incredible. I have been able travel, participate in fashion shows, worked behind the chair, worked as a platform artist for TIGI, managed, became partner of two salons in the valley and now run our education at the academy. Overall it has been rewarding, fun, and challenging life journey.”

Q: What do you love about teaching?

A: “I love the humility of the students. It really is great start with a blank canvas as opposed to sometimes working with a seasoned hairdresser. You are able to mold them and influence them on such a larger scale. It’s rewarding to see them grow throughout their journey here.”

Q: What is your favorite Toni & Guy Collection?

A: “Well the “Raw Collection” has always been my favorite. We were learning how to finish hair with our fingers instead of brushes. Of course I’m a big fan of the NYC Collection, mainly due to the fact that it was the first collection I was a part of. I also did the “Sarah” cut for the New Puritan.”

Q: What makes Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy such a great place to attend?

A: “Indeed the instructors and our education. All of our instructors here at the Scottsdale academy are seasoned professionals with a proven track record. That in turn breaths real life experience for the students when our course work is being taught. It allows them to relate to real life experiences and not just what they read from a book. Our education is second to none. It is applicable to every salon on the planet. As the French would say its Prêt-a porter (ready to wear)!”

Q: What is your favorite hobby outside of work?

A: “I really enjoy extreme sports and activities. I frequently climb Camelback Mountain and run bleachers. I also enjoy cooking for my family.”

Q: What is your best advice for new comers in this highly competitive industry?

A: “People with authority in your life usually got there for a reason. Listen to them. Be humble and learn to follow directions especially in the beginning of your career.”

Who is your fashion icon?
Gwen Stefani. I love her funky style and amazing attitude. I also love Kate Moss because her style looks effortless but always incredibly beautiful.

What are you looking forward to today?
Getting in front of the camera and working my awesome new hair and then going out to party cause its my birthday!

What is your favorite part of your job?
I get to travel, meet new people and every day is different. I love creating art through pictures with passionate people.

Blog Post: KELLER ACADEMY 1st STUDENT SOIREE

From the opening number featuring life-size Barbies to the Disney Fantasia-inspired dream sequence finale, the TONI&GUY Keller Academy knocked it out of the park with their first ever student soiree, “One Life, One Chance.” What was viewed as a huge success by both those involved and in attendance, didn’t happen overnight.

“From original concepts and storyboards to what appeared on stage, was about a three-month process,” educator Valerie Glasgow said. “The students did a fantastic job.”

The show also showcased segments including, Couples Through Time, Legends of Olympus, a 50s-era High School Rumble, Dia de Los Muertos, and a dinner theatre-esque version of the board game CLUE, complete with murder scene.

Academy Director Jody Cottrill recalled, “On the day of the show, everything was so organized, it was amazing – the hair, the make-up – everybody looked awesome. I was shocked at the number of people – it was standing room only, amazing for our first soiree.”

TONI&GUY will be taking their world renowned advanced education nationwide this Fall with their Pure Classics 2-Day Cutting Course. By popular demand TONI&GUY have created a condensed version of their 4-day course Modern Classics. Pure Classics will be offered at selected TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academies nationwide.

The Pure Classics 2-Day Course will teach unique approaches to mastering the fundamentals. Hairdressers will learn how to combine classic technique such as precision lines, soft graduation and fool proof layering patterns that allow them to create consistent results every time opening the door to endless creativity. Pure Classics is a hands-on course and includes the New Classic Cuts Book ($750).

On July 22, 2011 Zak Mascolo Creative Director of Toni&GUY USA was married to long time sweetheart Caroline De Sousa. The ceremony was held at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and was followed by a reception at the Brooklyn Museum. FETE coordinated the event and every detail reflected the exceptional taste of the bride and groom.   

200 guests were in attendance including Bruno Mascolo (CEO of TONI&GUY USA), Anthony Mascolo (TIGI International Creative Director), Heath Grout (TIGI UK Creative Director), and others.

  The Bride wore a Selia Yang gown and custom jewelry, belt and fascinator to give her attire a personal flair. For the reception she wore a cream Herve Leger bandage dress. The groom wore a custom tuxedo from Duncan Quinn.

Modern Salon featured the TONI&GUY Real Hair, Real People shoot in their July issue! Mentions include cover model, a four page spread, behind the scenes and a segment on Modern Salon TV. The shoot took place on April 15th at the South Coast Plaza Academy where our students, stylists, technicians, educators and team members were put in the spotlight!

Zak Mascolo had this to say about the inspiration behind the shoot – “The vision behind the Real Hair Real People shoot was that the best trends come from the street. The most creative people I know are constantly behind the scenes making everything come to life and together. TONI&GUY Atlanta Academy freshman students created their own in house fashion shows this week. The shows expressed a variety of personalities and styles with themes ranging from romantic to sleek and edgy.

They also honored Ashley Reid as Student of the Month for her outstanding client relations. Her chair is constantly full and it is no surprise that clients are loving her glowing enthusiasm and ability to translate their wants into reality. Congrats Ashley!

TONI&GUY Seattle Academy held their 1st Annual Soiree June 4th 2011 titled Viva Las Vegas! The show was a huge success and the crowd went crazy as the student’s models walked across the stage. All of the looks were inspired by Las Vegas hotels; MGM, Excalibur, Mandalay Bay, Circus Circus, Luxor, Caesars Palace, Golden Nugget and Treasure Island. Every aspect of Viva Las Vegas was created by students of the Seattle academy. Check out some of their work!

Four students from TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy in Erie were winners in the International Hair and Beauty Show’s hair styling competition held in New York City on May 23, 2011.
Winners were:

Ashley McCullum – 1st Place Student Freestyle Competition
Louis Snow – 3rd Place Student Freestyle Competition
Melissa Cihon – 2nd Place Student Barbering Competition
Kassandra Spacht – 5th Place Student Barbering Competition

The four winners will appear on the Bravo show “Jersylicious,” a reality television program that follows the personal and professional lives of the hair stylists and makeup artists who work at the Gatsby Salon in New Jersey.

Senior Floor Instructor at TONI&GUY, Melissa Hughes, accompanied the students to this event, at which schools from all over the country participate. TONI&GUY has been providing cosmetology, hairdressing, hairstyling, and beauty career training in the Erie area for many years and have graduated hundreds of students.

On Friday, May 13th the 23rd Annual Campus Couture Fashion Show wowed Long Beach and beyond!

This annual Spring fashion show showcases over 50 design students work and is the largest event on California State University of Long Beach’s campus.

This year’s sold out show had over 1000 attendees and TONI&GUY’s Costa Mesa and Santa Monica students delivered unstoppable hair and makeup to enhance the designers creations! Completing over 70 models for the show, students worked gracefully to complete a huge task and delivered gorgeous final results.

TONI&GUY has always believed in the value of on-going education and training for professional hairdressers. Getting a license is only the first step in a hairdresser's education. In order to continually excel in the salon, hairdressers must regularly update their skills. As a special graduation gift, we offer every graduate a 50% discount on all advanced training courses offered at one of our Advanced Training Academy locations during the first two years after graduation and 25% on all courses thereafter. Graduates may use this discount as often as they like. We do not require coupons and the discount has no limits. It's another way a TONI&GUY education pays our students back over their lifetimes.
