Learn how to create the best before & after picture for your Toni&Guy Makeover Photo Competition submission.
Former NAHA winner and Toni&Guy Creative Director Zak Mascolo shares his tips for submitting competition worthy hair photos.
1. Practice Makes Perfect - Practice and plan the makeover before you start. The final look will usually evolve but have an idea of what it will take to achieve the final look. Instead of just envisioning the final look, story boarding or drawing out the makeup palette helps direct you throughout the process.
2. Dramatic Elements - Make the change in your makeover dramatic but still tasteful. Whether you go from long to short or short to long, focus on the overall change & total look in your makeover. Include many elements of change including hair length, hair color, hair styling, full makeup & clothing. Make sure your model is wearing no make up and has hair down when you take the 'before' picture.
3. Presentation is Everything - Consider lighting, composition and cropping when taking both the 'before' and 'after' pictures.
Lighting - Remember if you're not using a flash, have a source of light such as the sun or light bulb shining towards the face and not in back or on top of the head. This will prevent shadows on the face and will help show off the makeover.
Composition - Taking the photo behind a solid backdrops such as a white wall or any solid color wall. This will help avoid including distracting elements in the background and allow the viewer to focus on the makeover. Make sure the model is looking the same direction in both photos.
Cropping - When aligning the before & after photos, make sure to align the tops of the heads and resize the photos so that the size of the heads in both pictures are nearly the same.
4. Technique Matters! - Whether you're a professional or not, we all have technique! Make sure you are concise but still descriptive in explaining your technique. Toni&Guy is all about education! We value the ability to communicate effectively and we thoroughly enjoy learning about your makeover process.

Toni and Guy Styles for OC Fashion Showcase
After the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, our Toni and Guy salon team in Hoboken, NJ came together to support the community and stay positive. A word from Toni and Guy salon owner Whitney Blischke: We were hugely fortunate to have not been victim to any material damage to the salon. The homes and businesses only two blocks down from us were not as lucky. The first day we regained power at the shop was also the same day power was restored in our home. After a much needed bath and meal, I headed to the salon to call all of our clients who had missed appointments…not knowing what their individual stories would be. 99% had incurred historic loss in one way or another. As a hairdresser, I listened. They trusted me to be compassionate regarding their situations. During our six days without power (hardly a headache compared to some) we, Peter (fellow salon owner) and myself, went back and forth to each one of our 24 team members, making sure everyone was accounted for and "well enough.” The following day Peter, Christine (Salon Director), Eden (one of our lovely assistants) and me detailed the salon whilst answering the ongoing ringing of the phone lines, as clients reached for some sense of normalcy. Even if it only meant a hairdo and solace with the one they trust doing that service. Our intentions were for our team to walk into a safe environment. One they could trust and depend on. We far exceeded our goal, even in spite of the nor'easter (big snow storm) that hit us just the day after we opened our doors again. As a community we are approaching each day with the thankfulness and fulfillment that we do, in fact, have this day. Below: The Hoboken community continues to be resilient and positive. Toni and Guy salon owners Peter and Whitney pose with the family for the annual Halloween Day Parade.
"Despite the storm, the Hoboken community came together for the annual Halloween Day Parade. People put out their decorations that had been removed pre-Sandy and welcomed the trick or treaters. It was the first time in weeks, when everywhere we looked, there were smiles on everyone’s faces. For just a few hours, the struggles of the storm were put on hold." - Toni and Guy Salon Owner, Whitney Blischke
