The world of fashion is a global industry offering a multitude of careers. Exciting roles aren’t just reserved for fashion designers. Hairstylists also play a major role in completing total looks for runway, editorial and celebrity events.
Hairstylists and designers have a special relationship built on collaboration with hairstylists playing an integral role in bringing a designer’s final visions to fruition. This blog post will cover steps you can take to achieve your goal of being a part of the fashion industry through a career in hairdressing.
Step 1. The foundation for your career is your education and obtaining your cosmetology license.
An education with TONI&GUY will set the stage for your career and provide you with experiences that will prepare you for a job in session work including runway and editorial. All TONI&GUY students participate in a Student Soiree Runway Show prior to graduation where they learn to concept looks to tell a story and experience the high energy of working backstage at a runway show. Students also have the opportunity to build their portfolio and participate in photo shoots in our annual Photographic Awards where our salons and academies compete nationwide.
Step 2. Once you graduate and obtain your cosmetology license it is time to gain real world experience often found through your time behind the chair.
TONI&GUY is a worldwide brand synonymous with fashion, quality and innovation and as a graduate you will be recognized by the industry for your professional training. This recognition may help you land a job at a top salon helping expose you to a clientele open to the latest fashion trends.
Step 3. Once you feel comfortable behind the chair we recommend you begin your pursuit to do session work.
Like many careers your success will be directly tied to your drive, passion and customer service skills. You can volunteer your services for editorial and runway or exchange your work with a photographer to gain imagery for your portfolio. Every experience will help you learn new skills and network with designers, stylists and photographers.

TONI&GUY National Technical Director Samantha Finely is excited for spring because of all the fresh new looks trending for this upcoming season.
Ladies, Spring is coming & everyone knows when your wardrobe changes so should your hair and make-up! It's time for a fresh new look to ring in the Spring season- So what's on the color palette?
BLONDES GO PLAYFUL
When we think of a spring blonde we normally think bright and sunny- not this season! Samantha suggests switching it up with metallic and pastel blondes. "These more desaturated looks are making a statement this spring. Some descriptive words to use when speaking to your color tech or hairdresser are: silver, smokey, pearl, lavender blush, and steel tones."
BRUNETTES GET SWEET AS HONEY
Brunettes should amp it up this spring- time to do some spring cleaning on those dark and dull locks. Warm up your hair with some carmel, honey, and butterscotch tones. Some celebrities with some sexy brunette locks: Olivia Wilde & Kate Beckinsale.
REDS GO FIERCE
To spice up your look for spring try dimensional color or highlights of auburn and copper tones to accentuate your naturally fierce color. Check out Gossip Girl's Blake Lively rocking her new firey red locks!

What was your first job in beauty? My first JOB in "beauty" was in hair school @ the TONI&GUY Academy in Dallas. I was Darian Bishop's model for an ASP (Advanced Salon Program) and my job was to sit there and behave while she did an Asian inspired up-style on me. All kidding aside, once I decided to do hair as my career I approached every opportunity to assist or volunteer my head (b/c I did once have longer hair) as though that was my job. Where did you get your license? I was licensed in Dallas TX. Career Highlights: My first "highlight" of my career was when Anthony Mascolo asked for me by name to hand him pins while working on fantasy shapes for our Vegas show (I think sometime in 2001) where I, in later years was asked by him to get the presentation models ready (Cut). Another highlight in my career has been the many opportunities I have had to travel the world, literally, doing and sharing what I love to do - HAIR. The third, and MOST important highlight is, through my hairdressing career with TONI&GUY, I met & married Peter Kain Villavicencio and now have two incredible little ones; Mable Joeney, 5 and Emerson RO, 2; by far my greatest and most treacherous achievement. Who is your beauty icon? There are so many, many, many, people I respect and admire in our industry, but I have to put my shout out to Zak Mascolo. Being named by Behind The Chair as a "rising star" is not an easy title to own, but he has shown what it takes to be a leader. He is the only one that can do it and I feel very honored to be a part of the building process.
